As you've no doubt noticed gas prices seem to be only heading upwards. If your boiler is over 5 years old it's most likely only 55% fuel efficient and if it's over 10 years old it's probably only 30% efficient. With older boilers you have a pilot light constantly burning even during summer, wasting up to 40% of the gas you pay for. There are a number of problems associated with older boilers - as they age they can become unreliable, increasingly inefficient and potentially unsafe. Parts become harder to find or unavailable. The heat exchanger and boiler valves can be affected by scaling. Gaskets and washers within the boiler can become worn and leak gas, carbon monoxide and water. Older boilers may provide much less control over water temperature, room temperature, and hot water availability. They may also take up an unnecessary amount of room in the kitchen or have been placed in an unsightly position.

The much more energy efficient condensing boilers with electronic ignition (no pilot light) are now required by law in all new boiler installations. While you don't have to have a new gas boiler to benefit from solar water heating, by having one you avoid both unnecessary carbon emissions and burning more gas than you have to.
