Vented cylinders are the most common type of water cylinder used in the UK and Ireland and are fed from a cold water tank. Solar power vented water cylinders have two heating coils, the bottom coil is heated by solar energy and the top coil is heated by the boiler or an immersion heater.
Unvented cylinders are plumbed directly into the mains water pumped into the building, which enables mains pressure hot water for appliances such as showers without the need for pumps. However, unvented cylinders are unsuitable for properties receiving low pressure mains water or if solid fuel, wood burning stoves or similar appliances are installed.
Thermal store cylinders are designed to utilise multiple sources of heat from solar power to wood burning stoves to boilers in order to power domestic hot water as well as under-floor heating.
